YUSUF AL-QARADAWI (1926–2022) was among the most influential Islamic jurists of modern times. A leading reformist, he sought a balance between modernity and traditional practices by promoting what he called centrist Islam. Not everyone regarded him as a centrist, however. While admired for his scholarship and advocacy for social justice, Qaradawi was also a polarising figure. His support for the Arab Spring movement and some controversial fatwas sparked much debate.
